The Gentle Genius of Trees was a great little book. I was a little concerned that the jokes were a little too young while the information was a little older. But about halfway through, and especially with the tie in to us “hairy beings” (humans) at the end, it ended up being just right.
I actually learned a lot about trees that I had never considered before. Who knew there was so much going on below the surface? And they can alert each other of danger and make their leaves taste bad?! Incredible!The pictures are very neat and have little surprises, jokes, and wittiness throughout. I did enjoy that the author used big technical terms and then broke it down to simpler terms.
I absolutely loved the “moral of the story” or what we can learn from the trees. A great way to remind us why it’s important to learn about the world and apply it to us. I would recommend this book to students who love facts or who love corny jokes. I think it would be best read by the student instead of as a read aloud.
