Tiger Daughter

Written by Rebecca Lim

Wow, this was an amazing middle grade novel about Chinese immigrants living in recent (pre-cell phone) Australia.

Wen and Henry are friends that encourage each other. They are studying together. working toward a scholarship at an exclusive private school. When disaster strikes, they continue to work toward their dreams and push each other to achieve.

There is a lot here – poverty, suicide, racism, depression, domestic violence/abuse. While the author doesn’t hesitate to tackle these topics, it is also done without any graphic details and has a happy (maybe happier than realistic) ending.
