Fork-Tongue Charmers (The Luck Uglies, #2)

Fork-Tongue CharmersWritten by Paul Durham

Fork-Tongue Charmers is the second book in The Luck Uglies trilogy, so I recommend reading The Luck Uglies before reading this book. Although the author gives brief backgrounds throughout, the reader can’t form that bond with the characters unless reading the first book, therefore wouldn’t be as invested in the second book.
In Fork-Tongue Charmers a new constable arrives in the village of Drowning and he’s declared Rye and her family outlaws. Her family escapes to the Island of Pest, Rye’s mother’s birthplace, where Rye learns more about her parent’s mysterious background. But the fight for their freedom, and more, is brought to the Island and Rye once again must defend all that she holds dear, along with a few special friends.

I really enjoyed the first book and was looking forward to its sequel since some storylines hadn’t been resolved and questions were left unanswered. The story started out as enjoyable as its predecessor but as I got more and more into it I started to feel disappointed. I felt there wasn’t sufficient motivation for the antagonist and friends to be giving the protagonist and friends so much trouble and grief. Boy was I wrong. As I continued on I found the last third of the story was full of surprises and plot twists with the same excitement, magic and action I’d experienced in book one. I’m now looking forward with anticipation to book three!
