Secrets of a Fangirl

Written by Erin Dionne

…Calling all geeks who are devoted fans to a fantasy series, or who dabble in the world of Comic Con! Written by Erin Dionne, Secrets of a Fangirl is about Sarah Anne, a middle school aged girl who loves playing on the school Lacrosse team, and hanging out with the cool kids. All the reason to hide her obsession with the MK Nightshade fantasy series that she got hooked on in Elementary school. The story has a humorous side as Sarah Anne tries to live in two worlds when she decides to compete in the Nightshade Realm National contest while keeping her identity as a Nightshade Wiz Kid a secret from her friends at school. As her online popularity as contestant “SAM” increases, so does her challenge to conceal her identity. The anticipation of how it will all end for SAM kept the pages turning and a smile on my face. Dionne’s descriptions of the awkwardness of Jr. High and the struggles to fit in are pertinent and real. The rites of passage into the popular cliques are relatable to all those who have experienced this or have been through the painful social sorting that occurs during a time when “fitting in” is so important. There is a moral to the story of being true to yourself; learning about who you are and being comfortable with being you.
