We Shall Overcome

Written and Illustrated by Bryan Collier

“We Shall Overcome” first began as a song by enslaved people and those seeking justice in the early 1900s. It later became a well known Civil Rights protest and gospel song. The book reads as the actual lyrics of the song. I love how author and illustrator, Bryan Collier, illustrated the pictures with historical landmarks in black and white and incorporated a colorful young African American girl from our day into the book.

The best part of the book is at the end in the “We Shall Overcome History” and in the illustrator’s notes. It explains all the landmarks and history of the song.
