Maybe a Mermaid is about an almost 6th-grade girl named Anthoni and her single mom who sells Bee Cosmetics. They move to a temporary cabin by a lake that Anthoni’s mom once enjoyed as a girl growing up for the summer. Anthoni is hopeful to make a true blue friend with a girl she went to kindergarten with, who will also be staying at the lake. On her first night in the cabin, she hears a mysterious sound coming from the water. She soon finds out that the owners of the lodge might have a secret. Between trying to learn how to swim and making new friends, Anthoni goes on a summer-long adventure full of mystery and learns what a real ‘ true blue’ friend is.
I would recommend this book to students who enjoy a fun mystery and love the idea that mermaids really exist.
