This book absolutely broke my heart. It focuses on a highly intelligent lab mouse that is set free from a science lab, after which she meets new friends and learns chess in order to try and save her own life as well as the lives of the other lab animals. It was well-written with lovely, believable characters, and it all carries a very vital but saddening truth about how animals are mistreated in science labs. This story teaches extremely important lessons about self-confidence, knowing even the smallest creature is important and has a will of their own and deserves respect and love like everyone else, as well as gives reminders about treating animals with love and kindness. A lovely read for teachers and students alike.
