This story takes place during the first few months of the lockdown at the start of the COVID pandemic. I think it’s clever to have a story take place during this historic event, but unfortunately it came out years after the event and doesn’t feel as relevant now. The storyline itself is pretty good – a slightly unique idea but with mainstream writing. Clay and his family are tiring of the restrictions of the lockdown and feeling frustrated and bored. On a walk through the forest, Clay comes across an unusual dog with a sparkly collar. This leads to other odd and fantastic events: meeting talking owls, seeing dragons, and being chased by fierce elves. There is some adventure here, but the delivery is a bit clunky. Young readers though should enjoy it.
