The Sheep, the Rooster, and the Duck

Written and Illustrated by Matt Phelan

I love the art in this book. Matt Phelan uses graphic novel panels to start out this story and intermittently throughout the book. Benjamin Franklin, King Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and other historical figures make this story come to life. And surprisingly, the sheep, rooster and duck were actually part of the history of hot air balloons in the late 1700s as well. As historical fiction, this book shows these real animals as being able to talk and actually making a difference in the safety of the world at that time.

As much as I like the art and story, it included some concepts that might be confusing or hard for kids to follow, especially the kids who read at the level this book is written. The art helps a lot, but I’m not sure which children this book would appeal to.
