Tasty: A History of Yummy Experiments

Written and Illustrated by Victoria Grace Elliott

There is a lot to like about this informative, graphic history of savory foods. The illustrations are excellent. The book dives into some of the geographical and political histories of food. There are some recipes included. There are some really interesting topics in here and I learned quite a few things. Who pickled the first pickle? How did World War II impact food? How many types of pizza are there?

There were also some things I didn’t like about the book. The first chapter on cheese is 50 pages! And probably the driest chapter in the book. I worry students won’t get past the first chapter. If I were suggesting it to a student, I’d suggest they skip chapter 1 and go back to it later if they enjoy the rest of the book. There are little food sprites telling the story and I found their bickering to be annoying and distracting.
