Stung

Written by Bethany Wiggins

Years earlier, the bee flu hit the humans hard. Children who were vaccinated against the virus turned into mindless creatures attacking humans everywhere. None were sentient until now. Fiona doesn’t remember falling asleep, but when she wakes up her entire world is different. She is now 17 and has five tattoos on each of her hands that she doesn’t know how she got. Fo gets captured by the militia and her childhood acquaintance, Bowen. Destined for a short and painful life in a laboratory, her friend is scared she’ll turn into a beast at any moment. To make things worse, she’s a female in a land dominated by mostly men. Forced to dive into chase scenes, battles, gladiatorial fights, and a possible romance, Fo is forced to lose her innocence to survive. Will she make it out alive from this?

The plot is action-packed, engaging, and full of plot twists. Character development is poor and takes a backseat to the world building and action. Readers who like zombies, action, adventure, and dystopic fiction will want to pick this one up. Recommended for most library collections. Gr 8 and up, 4 stars
