This book tells the legend behind the Guatemalan Worry Doll. It provides an opportunity to share other cultures with our students and show that people from many different places share the same concerns. With bold eye-catching illustrations, it works great as a read aloud, providing an opportunity to stop and talk about feelings and secrets, which all students have. This book features a loving relationship between a grandmother and granddaughter as well as showing characters with compassion for others. The story easily becomes a great hook for an art project in which students make their own worry dolls. (There are various tutorials online.) For students dealing with worries and secrets, the worry doll can offer a coping strategy. The Legend of the Worry Doll would make a great addition to library sections dealing with diversity, other cultures (perhaps representative of students in the classroom/school), emotions, and legends.
