Living with an abusive father, Scarlett and Tella have never left the island they live on. When the two sisters get a chance to be a part of Caraval, the two jump at the chance. When they get there, however, things aren’t always what they seem. When Tella gets kidnapped, Scarlett is forced to join in the game to win her sister back. As each clue gets more and more dangerous, Scarlett’s family’s dark past and the creator, Legend’s grudge against her family come to light. Can Scarlett save her sister? Will they make it out of Caraval alive?

This intense, mystery-filled book has well-developed, likable characters. The plot is complex, with plot twists galore. The book has several layers of plot that each play off each other and truly engage the reader. With a cliffhanger of an ending, this book is impossible to put down.
