Charlie Hernandez and The League of Shadows, by Ryan Calejo

Charlie Hernandez and The League of Shadows
Written by Ryan Calejo

Charlie’s life has turned upside down since a fire burned down his home and his parents are missing. Surviving middle school is already a challenge with the school bully tormenting him on a regular basis and having a crush on Violet, the most popular girl at school. To top it all off Charlie has begun some unusual growth spurts- horns on his head and feathers all over his body. Hoping to solve the mystery of his missing parents and why he is manifesting animal parts, Charlie follows the map found in his mother’s locket. This is only the beginning of Charlie’s adventures as he encounters Latino and Hispanic mythological creatures on his quest for answers. Fans of The Lightning Thief will enjoy this book; I certainly loved learning about different mythological creatures found in Latino and Hispanic culture. This book can stand alone, or the author could choose to create a new series following Charlie’s adventures. This would be a great book to recommend to students who dislike series but love a good adventure.
