Mel Fell

Written and Illustrated by Corey R. Tabor

This is a cute and simple read aloud for K-2nd grade about a little Kingfisher bird’s first attempt at flying. Many ancillary characters add to the story and try to catch her as she falls, but they don’t succeed. What will happen? At the back of the book, the author adds a note about Kingfisher birds that explains how they dive in the water for fish.

The book is cleverly designed to be turned to open from the top, so the pages are vertical which lends to Mel’s falling. You read top to bottom, until at a certain point you turn the book the other direction as the bird is then flying up to the top of the tree. This book is not just a story, but an experience!

This book tackles the theme of having the confidence to try something you really want to do despite your fear.
