In 1965, Catherine Hastings leaves her abusive father to join the circus as Victoria. With no money or things to her name except her mother’s Cartier broach, her adventure begins as a plan to escape to Texas. As she learns the ropes of the VanDrexel’s family circus, she begins to fall in love, not just with the circus and walking the high wire, but with James, the circus owner’s son.

Fast forward to the present. When her mommoves the two of them to an animal sanctuary, Callie has a hard time adjusting to life outside of the circus. Inside an old jewelry box she finds little notes of wisdom from her recently passed grandmother, Victoria. She decides to use these notes to help her navigate her scariest adventure yet, public high school. Will Callie find her net outside of the circus?

Alternating between points of view, readers are pulled into a heartwarming multigenerational story of three strong women. The plot is intriguing and well-developed. The characters are complex and readers will feel like they are walking in their shoes. Although the historical events are never really mentioned in the text, this plays well into the development of the characters as being disconnected from the world. This book will resonate with readers who enjoy multigenerational stories and stories with self-discovery and family.
